Some people claim that drug companies should have the obligation to invest money in researching medicine to help impoverished countries. Others, however, oppose that the primary task of these firms is to make profits. Personally, i think both views are reasonable.

Advocates believe that such corporations should take social responsibility to assist poor regions. It is true that many pharmaceutical enterprises have gained huge profits by selling their products to patients throughout the world. Therefore, it is reasonable for them to allocate money to do research on medicine for poor countries which often lack sufficient medicine to cure the patients who suffer from various kinds of diseases. Besides, to achieve progress, countries as well as international organizations should assist each other in this globalized society, so it is the same with those drug companies.

However, opponents would argue that the chief aim of drug companies is to make a profit. The cost of researching and developing a new medicine is rather high, so in order to maintain the operation of firms, making profits is also reasonable. In addition, making more money could help to expand the scale of enterprises, providing more job opportunities to the general public and increasing the tax revenue for governments.

From my perspective, I believe that it is not wise to sacrifice the interests of those drug companies to research medicine for poor countries as the main purpose of them it to make profits and survive in this competitive society. However, pharmaceutical companies should also be encouraged to take some responsibilities.
